Improving Well-being Mindfully
Day to day life events, stressors and responsibilities can take their toll on ones well-being if they aren’t paying close attention. Although it may seem more productive and effective to go full speed ahead, tackling one task after the next, in actuality it is an ineffective action plan. An alternative to this mad rush to the finish line, is to take a step back, pullover for a pit stop, and reconnect to our sensory experience. In order to accomplish this task one can choose to set time aside to be still, thus allowing oneself to develop an internal awareness, to begin listening within, and to recharge ones batteries. In doing so, studies show a decrease in stress, an improvement in sleep patterns, more present interactions with others, and an improved state of physical and emotional health.
When living in a fast paced society or city, where social norms and internal habits encourage us to be on automatic pilot, it may require a willingness to live life with intention and practice. In choosing to look within for direction rather than using the external world as a compass, you may discover that you are more grounded, peaceful and present than you ever thought imaginable. Try it out and see for yourself. Dr. Dan Siegel, who is a mindfulness practitioner and psychotherapist explains the benefits of mindfulness and how it can be incorporated into you daily life.
